Clan Bruce descends from a Norman family, variously traced to lands at Brix in Normandy or Bruges in Flanders, who settled in Scotland by the 12th century as the Bruces of Annandale and Clackmannan. The family produced Scotland's most celebrated medieval king, Robert the Bruce, though genealogists note the later chiefly line descending through the Earls of Elgin is not solidly documented as descending from the king himself. The earldom of Elgin was created in 1633, and its holders, seated at Broomhall House in Fife, have long served as chiefs of the wider Bruce name
