About this tartan

The Burnetts rose to prominence after Alexander Burnett supported Robert the Bruce and was granted lands on the River Dee at Banchory, along with the hereditary role of royal forester of the Forest of Drum; as a badge of office he received the carved ivory Horn of Leys, still held by the family. For roughly two and a half centuries the family lived on a crannog, a loch dwelling, before beginning construction of the stone tower of Crathes Castle in 1553, completed by a later Alexander Burnett in 1596. Crathes remained the family seat for nearly four hundred years, including through the Covenanting period, until Sir James Burnett gave the castle to the National Trust for Scotland in 1952
