About this tartan

Burns is a common Lowland Scottish surname best known through the poet Robert Burns, whose father William Burnes was a self-educated tenant farmer from Dunnottar in the Mearns (Kincardineshire); his mother Agnes Broun came from a farming family near Kirkoswald, Ayrshire. Despite its fame through the poet, 'Burns' does not appear among Scotland's recognized or armigerous clans listed by the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs, and no independent chief, arms, or clan seat associated with the name were found. It is best treated as a well-documented family/surname of humble farming origin rather than an organized clan.
