The Cairns surname derives from the Gaelic carn, meaning a pile of stones, originally a topographic name for someone living near such a landmark. Early records place the family chiefly in the Lothians, especially the parish of Cairns in Mid Calder, with the name appearing in charters from the mid-14th century onward, including a 1349 charter witness and a 1363 land grant from David II. A branch later moved into Galloway
