About Clan Blane

Blane, also spelled Blain, is a surname most associated with Wigtownshire and Ayrshire in southwest Scotland: an M'Blane appears in the Treasurer's accounts in 1473, Nicholas M'Blane was a burgess of Wigtown in 1539, and Patrick Blane was provost of Wigtown in 1561. The name is often connected to Saint Blane, a 6th-century bishop born on the Isle of Bute, whose cult produced several place names such as Dunblane and Kilblane. Blane is listed today as an armigerous clan, with arms on record but no chief recognized by the Lord Lyon; it is best understood as a regional family name rather than a Highland clan.
