2. Clelland Clan History (Clelland Tartan)

 This name is said to have originated from the Cleland or Kneland lands in Dalziel, Lanarkshire. The family has numerous branches that were based in Lanarkshire.

Alexander Kneland of that ilk is the first person by that name to be recorded. William Wallace's sister Margaret, who he married, was a staunch supporter of independence.

In the Scottish Wars of Independence against the English, Wallace's supporter Kneland participated. He may have participated in the Bannockburn Battle in 1314. For his services, Robert I gave him land, some of it in the West Lothian barony of Calder.

Throughout the ages, Clellands persisted in defending Scotland. In 1513, at the bloody Battle of Flodden, which also resulted in James IV's demise, Alexander Cleland of that Ilk and his cousin William fought and died in opposition to the English.

The assassination of Lord Darnley, the second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1567 was attributed to Alexander Clelland of that ilk. James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell and Mary's third husband, was related to Clelland.

The grandson of Alexander Clelland, also named Alexander, wed Lord Bargeny, the sister of John Hamilton. Their son sold the holdings of Cleland to a cousin after inheriting territory from his mother that belonged to the Hamiltons.

Since William Cleland (1674–1741), whose son John Cleland (d.1789) published the book "Fanny Hill," the family has been without a chief for more than 200 years.

3. Clelland Tartans

John Hocknull created the Clelland tartan in 1989 for the clan Clelland society. The Clellands were historically the Douglas family's foresters, hence it is based on the Douglas tartan.

Clelland is a sept of the Clan MacLellan, and there is evidence that it is also a sept of the Clan Douglas. It is also possible that Clelland is connected to the Forrester line.
