Early records place a Craig family on lands in Aberdeenshire in the 14th century, and John of the Craig of Aberdeenshire is recorded as leading a party of 300 men at the Battle of Culblean in 1335. The best-documented branch is the Craigs of Craigfintry, later of Riccarton, whose most notable member, the jurist Sir Thomas Craig (c.1538-1608), wrote Jus Feudale (1603), a foundational work that helped establish Scots law as a separate system; when the last Craig of Riccarton died in 1823, the estate passed to his nephew James Gibson, who took the name Gibson-Craig
