About Clan Gunn

By tradition the clan's progenitor was Gunni, said to descend from Viking adventurers, who came to Caithness in the late 12th century when his wife Ragnhild, sister of Harald Maddadsson, Earl of Orkney, inherited estates there. Centred on Caithness and Sutherland in Scotland's far north, the Gunns held strongholds such as Clyth and Halberry, and Dirlot passed to them in the fifteenth century; of Clyth virtually nothing remains, and only fragments of Halberry survive by the sea. In the fifteenth century, chief George Gunn served as crowner (coroner) of Caithness and became embroiled in a long, violent feud with Clan Keith, marked by the bloody 'Battle of Champions' at the chapel of St Tayre; the feud, which began in 1478, was not formally ended until a peace treaty was signed at the chapel site in 1978
