About Clan Haldane

Clan Haldane traces its origin to Bernard, son of Brien, who received the manor of Hauden from King William the Lion between 1165 and 1171. A cadet of the family is believed to have settled in Strathearn, and his lands later formed part of Gleneagles, which in 1482 was erected into a free barony for Sir John Haldane, Master of the Household to James III. Haldanes supported Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Independence, took a prominent part in the Reformation, fought for the royalists at Dunbar in 1650, and opposed the Jacobites in 1745-46
