About Clan Johnston
Clan Johnstone was once one of the most powerful Border Reiver clans. It settled in Annandale, where Gilbert de Jonistune is recorded after 1194, and Lochwood Tower was the chief's historic seat. A clan tradition credits a Johnstone with warning Robert the Bruce of danger from Edward I by sending a spur bound to a bird's wing, said to be the origin of the clan's winged-spur emblem
