About Clan Kerr

Clan Kerr is a Scottish Borders family traditionally said to descend from two brothers, Ralph and John, who settled in Roxburghshire after the Norman Conquest, founding the rival Ferniehirst and Cessford branches. Both lines rose to prominence as Border reivers and wardens of the Middle March, feuding with neighboring families such as the Scotts and Herons, and even with each other for generations. The Cessford Kerrs eventually became Dukes of Roxburghe, while the Ferniehirst line rose to become Marquesses of Lothian; today the Marquess of Lothian is recognized as chief of Clan Kerr, with Ferniehirst Castle near Jedburgh as the clan's historic seat
