About Clan Lockhart
The Lockharts descend from Symon Locard, who by family tradition changed the name to 'Lockheart' after he helped carry Robert the Bruce's embalmed heart on its journey toward the Holy Land in 1330, a crusade led by Sir James Douglas that ended in Spain when Douglas was killed fighting the Moors; Symon is said to have recovered the heart and its casket after the battle. The same journey is said to have brought the family the Lee Penny, a talismanic stone that inspired Sir Walter Scott's novel The Talisman. The Lockharts of Lee held their Lanarkshire estate from the 13th century until the 20th century, with Lee Castle serving as the ancestral seat before its sale in 1948
