About Clan MacDonald
Descended from Donald, grandson of Somerled. As Lords of the Isles, Clan Donald's chiefs ruled much of the west coast and the Hebrides until the lordship was forfeited in 1493. James IV forfeited the Lordship in 1493, fearing the clan's independent power, but MacDonald influence persisted for centuries afterward through numerous branches, including Sleat, Clanranald, Glengarry, Keppoch, and Glencoe, each of which developed its own chiefly line
