About Clan MacRae
Clan MacRae's origins are traditionally traced to Ireland, with the name meaning "son of grace" in Gaelic. Tradition also holds that the MacRaes shared ancestry with the Mackenzies and Macleans. Settled in Kintail by around the fourteenth century, the MacRaes were constant supporters of Clan Mackenzie in recorded times, providing warriors so consistently that they became known as "Mackenzie's shirt of mail." MacRaes were constables of the Mackenzie stronghold of Eilean Donan on Loch Duich in 1520 and for many years afterwards
