Clan MacSporran History

MacSporran (Gaelic Mac an Sporain, "son of the purse") is a recognised sept of Clan Donald, its name an occupational title for the hereditary purse-bearer, or treasurer, to the Lords of the Isles - one of a traditional sixteen hereditary offices said to have existed under the medieval Lordship. Clan legend cites a figure named "Paul na Sporan" as far back as 1015, though this very early date should be understood as clan tradition rather than a verified historical record; a firmer documentary reference is a 1168 charter naming "Pol an Sporain."

Clan legend also links the family to the founding of Clan Campbell itself, through Paul's daughter Eva, who is said to have married Gillespie Cambel - again, an origin story rather than documented genealogy. In the aftermath of Culloden and the suppression of Highland culture that followed, some bearers of the name are recorded as having anglicised it to "Pursell." In more recent times, Seumas (James) McSporran of the island of Gigha became locally famous for simultaneously holding around fourteen different jobs on the island, remaining well known until his death in February 2026.

Clan MacSporran Tartans

MacSporran is generally represented by a MacDonald-based tartan with a distinguishing gold stripe, sold commercially as a sept tartan rather than reflecting a separate, independently chief-registered MacSporran sett.

MacSporran has no independent Lord Lyon-recognised coat of arms or chief; as a Clan Donald sept, members traditionally wear the Clan Donald crest badge.

Clan MacSporran Places & People

The Isle of Gigha carries a modern connection to the name through Seumas McSporran (d. February 2026), well known locally for holding numerous jobs on the small island simultaneously.
