About Clan Matheson
The Mathesons settled around Lochalsh, Lochcarron and Kintail. The historian Black derived the name from the Gaelic for 'son of the bear', and the chief's arms have two bears as supporters. Granted lands by the Celtic Earls of Ross, the Mathesons appear early in the record: Kenneth MacMathan, constable of Eilean Donan, is named in the Norse account of King Haakon IV's expedition of 1263
