Maxtone is a Lowland Scottish surname taken from the lands of Maxton in Roxburghshire. It is said to share a common root with "Maxwell", both names being traced to a Saxon baron named Maccus ("Maccus-tun" and "Maccus-well" respectively). The family held the estate of Cultoquhey in Perthshire for centuries; Robert de Maxtone had a charter of the lands in 1410
