About Clan Maxwell
By tradition the Maxwell name comes from Maccus Well, a pool in the River Tweed near Kelso, named after Maccus, believed to have been a Norse chief in the reign of David I. Sir Eustace Maxwell held Caerlaverock Castle for the English before switching his allegiance to Robert the Bruce; he then withstood an English siege and dismantled the castle to keep it out of English hands, a sacrifice for which Bruce rewarded him. Clan histories say he followed Bruce to Bannockburn, and in 1320 Eustace Maxwell was among the barons named in the Declaration of Arbroath
