About Clan Newton

Newton is a Scottish surname of locational origin, taken from any of the numerous places called 'Newton' ('new town') scattered across Lowland Scotland, such as the old parish of Newton in Midlothian, rather than descending from a single kin group. It has no clan chief recognized by the Court of the Lord Lyon and is listed today as an armigerous name. It should not be confused with Newton Castle near Blairgowrie in Perthshire, which was owned for generations by the family of the Chief of Clan Macpherson until its sale in 2025.
