About Clan Ramsay
Symon de Ramesie may have come north with David, Earl of Huntingdon, in 1124. He was granted lands in Midlothian and witnessed a charter to Holyrood Abbey in 1140. A Lowland clan with the blue harebell as its badge, the Ramsays played a prominent role in the Wars of Independence: William Ramsay swore fealty to Edward I in 1296, but the family later backed Robert the Bruce, and William was one of the signatories of the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath
