About Clan Sandilands
The Sandilands family takes its name from lands of that name in Clydesdale, in Lowland Scotland. The family became closely allied with the powerful Douglases: Sir James Sandilands received the lands of Calder in Lothian from his brother-in-law William, Lord of Douglas, and Sandilands is considered a sept of Clan Douglas, with the Douglas tartan associated with the name. In 1564 Queen Mary created Sir James Sandilands Lord Torphichen, a peerage that survives today; the current Lord Torphichen is recognized as chief of the name, and the family seat is Calder House near Mid Calder in West Lothian
