About Clan Scrymgeour
Clan Scrymgeour's name likely derives from an Old French word for swordsman, reflecting the family's martial reputation. Its rise began with Sir Alexander Scrymgeour, a supporter of William Wallace who was named Constable of Dundee Castle and hereditary Royal Standard-Bearer of Scotland in 1298; a kinsman later carried the royal banner at Bannockburn in 1314. The family built Dudhope Castle near Dundee after acquiring the lands in 1495 and held the city's constableship for centuries
