About Clan Sempill

Clan Sempill is a Lowland Scottish clan rooted in Renfrewshire, with the name recorded there since at least the twelfth century, though its exact meaning is uncertain. During the Wars of Independence the sons of Robert de Sempill backed Robert the Bruce and were rewarded with lands around Largs and half the lands of Longniddry. Sir Thomas Sempill fell fighting for James III at Sauchieburn in 1488, and Sir John Sempill was created Lord Sempill by James IV in about 1489
