Clan Stewart descends from Walter FitzAlan, son of a Breton knight, who entered the service of David I in about 1136 and became Steward of Scotland. The surname Stewart comes from that office. The sixth High Steward married Robert the Bruce's daughter Marjorie, and their son became King Robert II in 1371, founding a royal dynasty that held the Scottish and later the English thrones until 1714
