About this tartan

Clan Fraser of Lovat rose to prominence in the Highlands through marriage: after the Bisset family, longtime holders of lands around Beauly, were disgraced and forfeited their estates, a Fraser married into the inheritance and the family took root in the Great Glen. By 1367 Hugh Fraser was styling himself lord of Lovat, and the title Lord Lovat was formally created in 1458. Chiefs of the line became known by the Gaelic patronymic MacShimidh ('son of Simon'), a name that endured for centuries
