Gow, from the Gaelic 'gobha' meaning smith, is an occupational surname rather than an independent clan; it is recognised as a sept of Clan Macpherson within the wider Clan Chattan confederation, alongside the closely related surname Smith. Tradition connects the name to a Perth smith remembered as 'Gow Crom,' who is said to have volunteered to fight for the Macphersons when their side was a man short at the legendary 'Battle of the North Inch,' a staged combat between rival Highland kindreds. Some older sources instead link the Gows to Clan Mackintosh in the 14th century, reflecting some disagreement among historians about the family's earliest allegiance
