Clan Hamilton emerged in the 13th century through Walter Fitz Gilbert, who received the lands of Cadzow in Lanarkshire from Robert the Bruce. The family rose to the highest ranks of Scottish nobility through royal marriage in the 15th century, eventually becoming heirs presumptive to the Scottish throne and gaining the dukedom of Hamilton in 1643, making it the premier peerage in Scotland. The clan played a significant, often turbulent role in 17th-century politics: the 1st Duke led a royalist army to defeat at the Battle of Preston in 1648 and was executed the following year, while his brother and successor was killed at the Battle of Worcester in 1651
