Clan Jardine is a Scottish Lowland clan seated at Applegirth on the River Annan in Dumfriesshire, with the surname tracing to the Norman French 'jardin' (garden) and appearing in Scottish charters from the 1150s. The family's original stronghold was Spedlins Tower, abandoned in the late 17th century after - according to clan tradition - the ghost of a miller who starved to death in its dungeon began haunting the keep; the Jardines then built Jardine Hall across the river in 1704. A baronetcy of Applegirth was created in 1672, and the Jardine chiefship has descended within this family in an unbroken, Lord Lyon-recognized line to the present day
