About this tartan

The Johnstones of Annandale were among the most powerful Border Reiver families, holding the central Dumfriesshire valley from at least the late 12th century and fortifying Lochwood Tower as their stronghold amid the region's marshes. A clan tradition credits a Johnstone with warning Robert the Bruce of danger from Edward I by sending a spur bound to a bird's wing, said to be the origin of the clan's winged-spur emblem. Their long and bloody rivalry with Clan Maxwell for control of the West March climaxed at the Battle of Dryfe Sands in 1593, near Lockerbie, where an outnumbered Johnstone force routed Lord Maxwell's army; the sword wounds inflicted that day reportedly gave rise to the phrase 'Lockerbie Lick.' The chiefship, elevated to the Earldom of Annandale and Hartfell, continues today, with the family seat at Raehills near Lockerbie.
