About this tartan

Clan Donald (MacDonald) descends from Donald, grandson of the twelfth-century Norse-Gaelic warlord Somerled, and became the largest and most powerful Highland clan, ruling much of the west coast and Hebrides as Lords of the Isles for over two centuries. James IV forfeited the Lordship in 1493, fearing the clan's independent power, but MacDonald influence persisted for centuries afterward through numerous branches, including Sleat, Clanranald, Glengarry, Keppoch, and Glencoe, each of which developed its own chiefly line. The Sleat branch, based on Skye at castles including Duntulm and later Armadale, is today recognised as the senior line, and its chief holds both the barony of Macdonald and the traditional title of High Chief of Clan Donald
