About this tartan

Clan Gregor traces its descent, by tradition, to Griogar, a son of the 9th-century King Alpin, giving rise to its defiant motto, "Royal is my race." The clan's heartland lay around Glen Orchy, Glen Strae, and Balquhidder, but because the MacGregors held their lands by the sword rather than by royal charter, they were gradually dispossessed by the neighboring Campbells of Glenorchy, who acquired legal title to MacGregor territory. Tensions culminated in 1603, when, after the MacGregors defeated the Colquhouns at the Battle of Glen Fruin, King James VI proscribed the clan entirely, making it a capital offense merely to bear the MacGregor name. The ban, lifted and reimposed several times, was not permanently repealed until 1774, during which period many MacGregors lived under adopted surnames
