About this tartan
Clan Mackenzie, known in Gaelic as Clann Choinnich ('children of Kenneth'), traces its chiefly line by tradition to Kenneth Mackenzie of Kintail around 1300, though the earliest chief confirmed by contemporary records is Alexander Mackenzie, 6th of Kintail, who died in 1488. Based in Kintail and later across Ross-shire, the clan's chiefly line became Earls of Seaforth in the 17th century, a title later forfeited after the Mackenzies backed the Jacobite rising of 1715. The clan was divided in loyalty during the 1745 rising, with the chief supporting the government while a cadet, the 3rd Earl of Cromartie, joined the Jacobites and was forfeited for it
