About this tartan

Clan MacLeod (Clann Mhic Leòid) descends from Leod, younger son of Olaf the Black, a Norse King of Man who died in 1265; Leod is said to have married the heiress of Dunvegan around 1220, bringing Dunvegan Castle on Skye into the family, where it remains the clan seat to this day. The clan split early into two branches: the MacLeods of Harris and Dunvegan (Sìol Tormoid) and the MacLeods of Lewis, Assynt, and Raasay (Sìol Torcaill). Dunvegan Castle, developed piecemeal from the thirteenth century and remodelled in the nineteenth, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited castles in Scotland
