About this tartan

Clan MacRae's origins are traditionally traced to Ireland, with the name meaning "son of grace" in Gaelic. The clan became closely and durably allied with Clan Mackenzie of Kintail from the 13th century onward, providing warriors so consistently that they earned the nickname "Mackenzie's shirt of mail." For generations, MacRaes served as hereditary constables of the Mackenzie stronghold of Eilean Donan on Loch Duich, a role that lasted until the mid-17th century.
