About this tartan

Clan McKerrell (MacKerrell) is a small Ayrshire clan whose Gaelic name, Macfhearghil ('son of Fearghal'), points to ancient Celtic origins in Carrick; a bearer of the name is recorded witnessing a charter in the reign of William the Lion. The family's seat was Hillhouse, near Troon, held from at least the sixteenth century. Sir John Mckirel distinguished himself at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388, and in the eighteenth century John McKerrell, 8th Laird, is credited with introducing the silk-weaving industry to Paisley
