About this tartan
Clan Menzies descends from a Norman family, originally styled de Meyners, that came to Scotland in the 13th century and rose at the royal court, with Sir Robert de Meyners serving as chamberlain to Alexander II. The family was rewarded with lands in Atholl and Argyll after fighting alongside Robert the Bruce, and by 1510 had renamed its stronghold near Weem as Castle Menzies. Clan tradition traces the distinctive motto to the 1330 Battle of Teba in Spain, where the chief is said to have pledged himself to a call to arms from Sir James Douglas while escorting Bruce's heart toward the Holy Land
