About this tartan

Clan Murray traces its origin to Freskin, a twelfth-century Flemish knight granted lands in West Lothian and the ancient Pictish province of Moray by David I; his descendants took the territorial surname 'de Moravia,' later anglicised to Murray. In the sixteenth century, the Murrays of Tullibardine secured the clan chiefship, and the first Earl of Tullibardine's marriage to the heiress of the Stewart Earldom of Atholl brought that title into the family in 1626; it became a marquessate in 1676 and a dukedom in 1703. The best-known Murray chief was not a duke but a younger son: Lord George Murray, the Jacobite general who commanded much of Bonnie Prince Charlie's 1745 campaign and led the only successful Jacobite charge at the Battle of Culloden
