Clan Ralston takes its name from lands east of Paisley in Renfrewshire, 'Ralph's Town,' possibly named for a younger son of an Earl of Fife or for Ralph, chaplain of Paisley Abbey in the late twelfth century. The earliest recorded member, Jacobus de Rauliston, appears in 1219, and the family later produced John de Ralston, who became Bishop of Dunkeld and royal treasurer by 1447. Ralstons fought at Flodden in 1513 and Pinkie in 1547, and the family later expanded into Ayrshire before some members received land grants in Ulster in 1610 and Kintyre in 1650
