Clan Shaw belongs to the Chattan Confederation and traces its founding to John, second son of Angus, an early chief of Clan Mackintosh, and Eva, heiress of Clan Chattan. John's grandson, Shaw Mor, is said to have led the thirty champions of Clan Chattan to victory in the famous 1396 judicial combat on the North Inch of Perth, for which the family was rewarded with the lands of Rothiemurchus near Aviemore. The Shaws held Rothiemurchus, part of the ancient Caledonian Forest, from the fourteenth century until the estate passed to the Grant family around 1567
