Clan Sinclair descends from Norman-French origins, with the family gaining lands in Lothian before extending north to Orkney and Caithness under grants from Scottish kings including David I. Sinclairs held the earldom of Orkney in the medieval period and later the earldom of Caithness, building the formidable clifftop stronghold of Castle Sinclair Girnigoe near Wick. Clan history includes dramatic internal conflict, including a 16th-century episode in which the 5th Earl of Caithness avenged his father's death in captivity at the hands of the 4th Earl, earning him the nickname 'Wicked George.' The Sinclairs are also closely associated with Rosslyn Chapel near Edinburgh, built by the family in the 15th century
