About this tartan

Smith is an occupational surname - the English equivalent of the Gaelic Mac a' Ghobhainn, 'son of the smith' - rather than the name of an independent Highland or Lowland clan with its own chief and territory. Because ironworking was a valued hereditary craft, smiths (rendered in Gaelic as Gow or MacGowan) were typically retained within larger clans as armourers, and the Smith name became recognized chiefly as a sept of Clan Chattan, particularly the Mackintosh and MacPherson families, with smaller pockets under Clan MacFarlane, MacDuff, and MacDonald. A separate, unrelated medieval Clan MacGowan existed in Nithsdale, Dumfries and Galloway, documented from the 14th century
