About this tartan

The Spottiswoode family takes its name from the lands of Spottiswoode near Gordon, Berwickshire, its historic seat. The name (also spelled Spottiswood, Spottiswode, or Spotswood) became especially notable through John Spottiswoode (1565-1639), Archbishop of St Andrews and Primate of All Scotland, born at Mid Calder, West Lothian, the son of a Church of Scotland minister. His son Robert Spottiswood served Charles I, and later descendants continued in law, the church, and public life; colonial Virginia governor Alexander Spotswood is generally linked to the same wider family
