Clan Strange (also recorded as Strang) is a Lowland Scottish clan whose surname likely derives from the Norman-French word for 'foreign,' though the Scots variant 'Strang' may instead reflect the word for 'strong.' The family is recorded serving the Scottish crown from the mid-13th century, and by 1362 John Strang had acquired the Balcaskie estate in Fife through marriage, which the family held for over two centuries. A Strang of Balcaskie was killed at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh in 1547, and a cadet branch that settled in Orkney later produced Sir Robert Strange, a celebrated engraver who served in Bonnie Prince Charlie's Life Guard during the 1745 Jacobite Rising and survived Culloden. The clan chiefship was formally confirmed by the Lord Lyon in 1995 in the person of Major Timothy Strange of Balcaskie, Baron of Balcaskie, who continues the line today.
