About this tartan

Clan Sutherland takes its name from the region of Sutherland in the far north of Scotland, known in Gaelic as Cataibh, 'land of the cat [tribe],' reflecting an ancient Pictish territorial name. The earldom of Sutherland, created around 1230, is among the oldest in the Scottish peerage, and its holder has traditionally served as clan chief, seated at Dunrobin Castle on the Sutherland coast. The family held centuries of regional lordship across the northern Highlands
