About this tartan

Clan Trotter is a Scottish Borders family whose name is traditionally said to derive from the Old French 'trotier' (runner or messenger), after an ancestor reputedly served as a swift courier for James III. The chiefly line, Trotter of Mortonhall, held lands in Berwickshire (Prentannan/Prestonhall) before settling at Mortonhall near Edinburgh. Trotters fought at the Battle of Flodden in 1513, supported Charles I during the Civil War, and kept Jacobite sympathies into the 18th century
