Sources give two conflicting origin stories for the name Akins. One tradition treats it as a variant of Aiken/Atkin/Adkins, an English patronymic meaning 'son of Adam,' listed as an associated sept name of Clan Gordon. A separate, unrelated tradition traces 'Akin' to a place-name on the Isle of Skye (Kyle Akin, Gaelic Caol Acain), commemorating a 1263 crossing by King Haakon IV of Norway, with an early recorded bearer 'John of Akyne' in 1405; this account describes a small clan whose chiefship went dormant after a 17th-century chief emigrated first to Ulster and then to Maryland
