Anderson, meaning "son of Andrew," is one of Scotland's most common surnames, and the associated clan is classified as armigerous, having had no Lord-Lyon-recognized chief in modern times. The largest early concentration of the name is documented in Aberdeenshire from the 15th century, where Anderson landowners and members of parliament used a crest of an oak tree with the motto "Stand Sure," symbols later adopted informally by Andersons more broadly. A 16th-century Lord Lyon record refers to an "Anderson of that Ilk," but this figure's identity has since been lost to history
