About this tartan

The Baillie surname comes from the medieval office of bailie, or bailiff, rather than from any place name, with the earliest record dating to 1311 when a William de Baillie served as a juror in Lothian. That William's namesake descendant was granted the barony of Lamington in South Lanarkshire by David II in 1368, founding the family's main Lowland line, from which branches spread to Carphin, Jerviston, Castlecary, and, in the Highlands, to Dochfour and Dunain near Inverness. Baillies fought on the losing Marian side at the Battle of Langside in 1568 and suffered forfeiture as a result
