About this tartan

The Bell family was long established around Middlebie in Dumfriesshire and the wider Anglo-Scottish border country, historically one of the surnames associated with the Border reiving families that raided and feuded across the frontier through the 16th century. The surname also appears in variant forms including Beal, Biel, and Bail across the Borders and beyond. Bell is an armigerous clan today, with no chief currently recognized by the Lord Lyon King of Arms, and its motto, 'I Beir the Bel,' plays on the family name
