Clan Bisset descends from Norman settlers who arrived in Scotland with William the Lion around 1174. John Bisset founded a stronghold and priory near Beauly in Inverness-shire around 1230, and his family became Lords of Lovat. That position collapsed after 1242, when John's father and uncle were implicated in the murder of the Earl of Atholl and fled into exile; John Bisset, Lord of Lovat, later died in 1260 without a surviving son, and his lands were divided among three daughters, passing the Lovat title itself into the Fraser family, of whom Bissett is now considered a sept
